Summary:

Aik Pyar Kahani by Minhal Hassan is a deeply emotional and poignant narrative that transcends traditional romance to explore the devastating psychological impact of broken families, parental negligence, and divorce on innocent children. The central figure, Khushi, whose very name contrasts sharply with the agonizing reality of her life, embodies the immense trauma of growing up neglected by her divorced parents, Alishba Begum and Munawar.
Throughout the narrative, the author brilliantly exposes the selfishness of parents who prioritize their ego and new lives over the emotional well-being of their children. Khushi’s journey is one of profound isolation, enduring physical and emotional abuse from a stepmother, and absolute abandonment at boarding school. When her parents finally attempt to re-enter her life out of guilt, Khushi fiercely rejects their hypocritical affection. Her powerful defiance—most notably her heartbreaking declaration that she would rather bear the name of a true humanitarian like Abdul Sattar Edhi than carry the names of her biological parents—strikes at the core of societal hypocrisy regarding blood ties.
Ultimately, the story serves as a mirror to society, emphasizing that genuine love, care, and humanity define true relationships far more than biological connections. With compelling character development and raw emotional depth, the novel leaves a lasting impact on its readers.

About The Novel:

English

”My nine-year-old wish has finally come true… The ones who brought me into this world are standing right before my eyes,” she said sarcastically.
”Khushi!” Munawar called out to her sternly.
”What, Khushi? Tell me, when I already told you never to try to see me again, why are you here?” she shouted angrily.
”I came here to see you; I was missing you…” he faltered, his tone softening.
”Oh really, you were missing you? So does Mrs. Shaila know that you are here at my place, coming to meet me?” she asked in a mocking tone.
”And you remembered me after five years, right when you caught a glimpse of me at the ice cream parlor a week ago? Right?” she asked, causing him to lower his gaze in shame.
”I have one question for both of you… What were you both thinking when you named me Khushi (Happiness), when neither of you ever gave me an ounce of happiness in my life?” she asked, tapping her finger against her cheek.
”Khushi, I only left you behind so you could forget me and adjust with your dad. Besides, I couldn’t keep you with me because my second husband is not your mahram, and a girl’s honor is as delicate as glass. At least you would have lived honorably in your father’s house,” Alishba Begum tried to placate her.
”And how honorably did my father let me live? Please, spare me these hollow pretensions…” Following your divorce, when I returned from my tour, I checked the home CCTV footage from the time of my absence. I saw the bitter fights between you both, where you told Mr. Munawar that if he was a man, he should divorce you right then—and he gave it to you immediately without a single thought about me! And even after coming here, I checked the security footage from this house too, where you clearly told him that you didn’t bring me as part of any dowry, so my father should handle me himself,” she replied to Mrs. Danial with a voice dripping with hatred, making her look away in sheer guilt.
”Khushi, my child, don’t say things like that… I came here today to take you home. Roshni will be so happy to see you,” he pleaded, but Khushi shook her head in refusal.
”So you want to take me back just for Roshni’s sake? Is your current wife also facing trouble handling her own children like Mrs. Danial did, and doesn’t want to leave Ayan and Roshni at the mercy of a nanny?” she fired a sharp, venomous arrow of sarcasm disguised in a sweet voice.
”Khushi, watch your tongue! How long do I have to tolerate your insolence? We are your parents!” he roared in anger.
”Which parents?! Tell me, which father and where is the mother? Where were these so-called relationships when I needed them the most? Where were you both when Mrs. Shaila made me wash the dishes? Where were you both when Mrs. Shaila burned my hands? Where were you both when she turned off the water valve and forced shampoo into my eyes until they were damaged? Tell me, where were you both when a girl at the hostel was pulling my hair out? And where were you both when I suffered a nervous breakdown? You weren’t there! Neither of you! So now, I don’t need either of you anymore. Go away! Get out of my life—so far that I never even have to see your faces again! I hate you both so much… I hate you to the core that if I had my way, I’d strip your name from my identity and replace it with Abdul Sattar Edhi’s!” she screamed in raw, unfiltered hatred.
Years of pent-up poison spilled out with every shriek until her throat grew hoarse. A flood of tears rushed down her face. Sobbing uncontrollably, she suddenly clutched her chest right over her heart, sinking down onto the floor. Agony distorted her features. Her entire body broke out into a cold, drenching sweat.
”Aah…” she groaned, pressing her hand tightly against her heart. “Nano…” In her sheer agony, she cried out for Saira Begum instead of her own mother.
”Khushi…!” They both rushed forward urgently, but Khushi had already slipped away into unconsciousness.
Sticken with guilt, both parents stood frozen, unable to meet each other’s eyes. Then, Munawar swiftly scooped her up into his arms and bolted toward the exit, while Alishba Begum hurried behind toward her car.
